Our client based near Durham is looking for a Lead Vet to join, motivate and develop amazing team. 

This role will be to provide leadership, management, mentorship and support for clinical staff and work in partnership with the Company Directors, Clinic Manager & Head Nurse to optimise services to clients and patients, in order to develop the business by maximising turnover and productivity.   You will be responsibility for clinical and behavioural standards within the practice, ensuring they are in line with the RCVS code of professional conduct. You will deliver and maintain the highest standards of governance in relation to clinical meetings, CPD, clinical development planning and creating clinical protocols / frameworks, clinical audits and recording of unexpected clinical events, in conjunction with Company Directors, Clinic Manager & Head Nurse.  Mor importantly you will provide appropriate surgical and medical care to patients, adhering to the RCVS five principles of practice.

Key Responsibilities:
Delivering Results
  • Effectively lead the practice team using effective communication, prioritisation and planning skills, ensuring the consistent delivery of policies and procedures; in line with practice protocols and RCVS Code of Professional Conduct.
  • Lead the ethical requirements of a veterinary practice and ensure that both professional and support staff fulfil these responsibilities.
  • Understand and implement the current Health and Safety and COSHH regulations.
  • Work in accordance with, and develop, the Practice protocols and policies as required.
  • Provide a safe and secure environment for all employees and customers through the maintenance of the Practice premises, in conjunction with Company Directors.
  • Proactively take action to ensure the debt position within the Practice is fully controlled.
  • Provide key information to customers and employees through the effective use of noticeboards, social media and other channels of communication.
  • Obtain strong brand awareness, and understanding of competitor activities in order to know the local community and customer needs.
  • Understand and actively promote the Pet Health Plan Scheme.
Developing People
  • Role model clinical excellence through your own active development plan.
  • Role model excellent client services, making sure all the practice team know the importance of delivering “excellence every day” and the consequence if this is not done.
  • Ensure complaints procedure is understood by the whole team, with all client concerns addressed in a fair and timely manner, in conjunction with Company Directors and Clinic Manager.
  • Lead clinical development and training of all staff.
  • Hold regular clinical team meetings in order to encourage group learning, and create agreed clinical frameworks to ensure the delivery of clinical excellence, which is consistent between all staff.
  • Know and understand the competition to ensure we attract and retain key people, and actively talent spot both internally and externally for key roles, keeping recruitment costs to a minimum.
  • Actively encourage communication, sharing news and updates etc.
Setting Direction
  • Along with Company Directors, Clinic Manager & Head Nurse, coordinate and support regular practice and department meetings following up on any points raised.
  • Deliver client satisfaction.
  • Promote a culture of learning from critical and unexpected incidents, through a no blame culture, ensuring protocols are in place, and followed up with an individual training plan where necessary, in conjunction with the Company Directors, Clinic Manager & Head Nurse.
  • Alongside Clinic Manager and Head Nurse, manage, report, and monitor team time keeping.
  • Ensure all staff use PPE and radiation badges appropriately and are responsible for compliance within the local rules.
  • Liaise with the RCVS in a professional manner as required and ensure that the practice is fully prepared to pass the RCVS inspection if / when due.
  • Ensure robust processes are in place, to control access to dangerous drugs to only those who should have access. Take measures to ensure recording of dangerous drugs is accurate and compliant, making clear the consequences of failure to do so.
  • Understand and adhere to all RCVS and VMD regulations in relation to the storage, administration and dispensing of all categories of veterinary medicine. Ensure compliance with the Practices preferred drugs list via liaising with Company Directors.
This is a full time tole for 4 days per week and Saturday mornings on 1: rota. In relation to time set aside for admin / mentoring etc. this would be given over 2 days (e.g. two half days), however this is not necessarily fixed, and can be flexible (for example this could be one full day, or managed as business needs require). Ideally you will like someone who is willing to train in keyhole surgery, specifically Laparotomy Spay's (if not already competent in this area). Otherwise they are also open to support areas of interest / certificates, such as orthopaedics.

The client would like someone who can respond and contribute positively to changes made and ensure understanding of the reasons behind decisions; take an active role in change implementation. You will deliver a high standard of customer service and respond to complaints in accordance with the complaints protocol, in conjunction with Clinic Manager & Company Directors.
